I had long-term postoperative rehabilitation physiotherapy custom designed for me. Following fusion of bones in my foot and a difficult postoperative healing process, I was recommended to attend this practice by my Orthopaedic Surgeon. Initially I attended appointments with Steven Hanley when I was just out of being in a cast for 12 weeks and on crutches trying to weight bear, still with wounds requiring regular dressing changes. Initially I couldn't tolerate weight, touch or even gentle manipulation. However with a tailored programme of very simple, extremely painful, boring, repetitive and absolutely essential exercises my mobility slowly improved. I eventually progressed to fortnightly, then monthly and finally 6 weekly appointments over the 9 month period. Exercises included up and down on tip-toes, proper heal-toe walking, static cycling, walking on treadmill, balance and wobble boards, squats, up and down stairs, one legged balance/squats etc. Very little actual hands on by Steven this was fundamentally rehabilitation with me in charge and having to take responsibility for my own recovery. Now I'm discharged but my rehabilitation continues alone. I doubt I'll ever be fully mobile and am still in unbelievable pain, but what I have learnt about chronic pain management with Evolution Physio has enabled me to confidetly cope with my various medical conditions including fibromyalgia and widespread osteoarthritis. Gentle exercise and movement is important in trying to manage these chronic conditions amongst other strategies. I highly recommend Steven Hanley at Evolution Physiotherapy, Ballyclare.
